
Tree Planting Ceremony – Sinhala and Hindu New Year 2026
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully conducted a Tree Planting Ceremony in accordance with traditional Sinhala and Hindu New Year (Avurudu) rituals on 23rd April 2026 at 9:01 a.m., the designated auspicious time (nekath) for planting.
The event was held in front of the plant house of the faculty premises and was organized by the Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, in collaboration with the Environmental Committee of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine.
The ceremony was graced by the Dean, Prof. S.P. Molligoda, adding significance to the occasion. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of Ayurveda and Unani academic staff, non-academic staff, and undergraduate students, demonstrating a collective commitment to environmental responsibility..
In keeping with traditional customs, participants were dressed in golden/yellow attire, symbolizing prosperity and auspicious beginnings. Following the tree planting activity, refreshments (Osupan) were served to all attendees.
This initiative highlighted the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge systems with environmental sustainability practices, while reinforcing cultural values associated with the Sinhala and Hindu New Year. It also served as a platform to promote environmental awareness and strengthen community engagement within the faculty.
