The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine (FIM) is the leading Higher Educational Institute in Sri Lanka that provides instructions in Ayurveda, Unani and Indigenous system of medicine at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and its precursor is Institute of Indigenous Medicine. The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine of the University of Colombo was established by an order of Gazette Extraordinary No 2319/22 - Wednesday, February 13, 2023, as the 10th Faculty of the University effective on the 1st of March 2023.
Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit
The Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit - Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo was ceremonially inaugurated on 20th May 2023 by Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo. Dean and the Staff-FIM, Assistant Commissioner of Ayurveda (Technical), Administrative Staff of Borella National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Registrar - Ayurvedic Medical Council, PG scholars and other well-wishers grace the occasion.
Board of Study (Ayurveda) and Board of Study (Unani) – Faculty of Indigenous Medicine
The Board of Study (BoS) is a statutory body responsible for overseeing postgraduate and mid-career development courses conducted by the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine (FIM), University of Colombo. The Board is entrusted with the responsibility of recommending by-laws, course curricula, academic programs, resource persons, assessment methods, examinations, budgets, admissions, and other matters related to the courses conducted through the Postgraduate and Mid-career Development Unit of the Faculty.
The BoS is responsible for ensuring that all proposals submitted to the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine and the Senate of the University of Colombo are academically appropriate and comply with the required academic standards. In addition, the Board monitors the progress of each program and is accountable for maintaining coordination with stakeholders, assuring academic quality and standards, and safeguarding academic integrity.
The term of office of the Board of Study is three years. The composition of the BoS includes the Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine as the Chairperson, the Deputy Registrar as the Secretary, the six Heads of Departments, the Coordinator of the Postgraduate and Mid-career Development Unit, the Coordinator of Ayurveda Courses, the Coordinator of Unani Courses, the Director of the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, the Director of the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute.
From December 2025 onwards, with the approval of the senate and the council the Board of Study of the Postgraduate and Mid-career Development Unit has functioned as two separate Boards: The Board of Study (Ayurveda) and the Board of Study (Unani). The composition of both Boards remains the same; however, postgraduate course coordinators of the respective disciplines participate on an invitation basis for the relevant Board of Study meetings.
