World Ayurveda Day is celebrated annually to promote and revive the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine rooted in natural healing and holistic well-being. Initiated by the Government of India in 2016, this global observance takes place on Dhanvantari Jayanti (Dhanteras), a day dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the Holy deity of Ayurveda and health. The objective of this day is to raise global awareness about the principles of Ayurveda and its potential in preventing diseases and promoting wellness.
At the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, we proudly celebrate World Ayurveda Day each year as a tribute to our rich heritage. As a key event in our academic calendar, we organize a series of activities including lectures, cultural programs, and interactive sessions aimed at educating students and the wider community about the significance of Ayurveda. Our celebrations reflect our commitment to preserving this ancient science and demonstrating its relevance in addressing contemporary health challenges.
In this year of 2024, collaborating with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, High Commission of India, Colombo has made the World Ayurveda Day Commemoration more enriching and vibrant.
World Ayurveda Day serves as a reminder of Ayurveda’s continued influence across the world, encouraging people to adopt its holistic practices for a healthier lifestyle. Join us as we honor and uphold this ancient science, which remains deeply rooted in our traditions and integral to our future.
