The Inauguration of the Orientation Program for 2021/22 Batch (BAMS/BUMS) , Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo

1st of June 2023 was a historical day for the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. The inauguration of the orientation program was ceremonially held on 1st June 2023 for the 1st batch of BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery) and BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) undergraduate degree program for the academic year 2021/2022, after transform to the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine at University of Colombo.

Total 185 students had been registered for both the academic programs and they had come to the faculty with their parents enthusiastically. With the arrival of the Chief guest, Senior Professor HD Karunarathna, the Vice Chancellor of University of Colombo, the induction program was commenced. After Performing Buddha Pooja, veneration of preceptors specially to Lord Dhanvantari who is considered as the profounder of medical science, Ayurveda was conducted for the blessings of new students symbolizing SHISHYOPANAYANA in Ayurveda which indicates a ritual that one undergoes at the beginning of study.

The guests, parents, students and other invitees were welcome by Prof. Pathirage Kamal Perera Founder Dean, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo and further he briefly explained the academic program and pointed out the demand and opportunities available globally to the BAMS and BUMS degree holders. Then the gathering was addressed by the Chief guest, Senior Professor HD Karunarathna, the Vice Chancellor of University of Colombo and stated the strength of the University of Colombo which secured the number one in Sri Lankan universities and welcome new members to the University as important stakeholders.

Dr Rajitha Silva, Senior Student Counsellor of University of Colombo assure the parents and students about the service of student counselors of the university in managing different types of students’ issues. Some guidance about academic activities was provided to the students by the Senior Assistant Registrar of the faculty, Ms Anoma Rathnayake. President of the Students’Union, Mr Janith Ranaweera addressed the parents and junior brothers and sisters and give a description about students life and assure to maintain a peaceful environment in the faculty. Next the gathering was addressed by the Permanent Student Counsellor of the faculty, Dr. (Ms) W A S S Weerakoon and she stated important factors to be adhered as undergraduates. Finally, the vote of thanks was delivered by the Dr. (Ms)OTMRKSB Kalawana, the coordinator of the orientation programme.
