The Inauguration Ceremony of the Certificate in Herbal Cosmetic Product Development (3rd Intake), Certificate Courses in Acupuncture (2nd Intake) and Basic Principles of Ayurveda Dietary Regimens (3rd Intake)

The inauguration ceremony of the Certificate in herbal cosmetic product development (3rd Intake), Certificate courses in Acupuncture (2nd Intake) and Basic principles of Ayurveda dietary regimens (3rd Intake) was successfully held on 8th November 2025 at the Mini auditorium of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo to mark the commencement of the new intakes of the courses.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor S.K.M.K. Herapathdeniya, Head of the Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, who warmly welcomed the distinguished guests, academic staff, and new participants. Following the welcome, Professor Pathirage Kamal Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of such certificate programs in promoting professional development and enhancing practical knowledge in traditional medicine and allied fields.

The ceremony was graced by Mr. Wang Li, President of the International postgraduate students association, University of Colombo, who attended as the Guest of Honour. He delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing the global recognition and value of herbal-based product development in modern wellness industries.

 

A special guest address was also delivered by Dr. Indira Kahawita, Consultant Dermatologist, National Hospital of Sri Lanka, who provided valuable insights into the integration of dermatological science with herbal cosmetics. She particularly highlighted the potential harmful effects of commercially available skin whitening creams, unregulated or toxic ingredients. Dr. Kahawita emphasized the importance of scientific validation, safety in formulation, and the role of herbal alternatives in promoting healthy skin without adverse side effects.

Professor Kaumadi Karunagoda, Head of the Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics, also addressed the audience, appreciating the initiative of offering specialized courses that bridge traditional wisdom and contemporary research.

Subsequently, course handbooks were distributed to the participants, marking the official commencement of the academic program. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Professor S.P. Molligoda, Head of the Department of Basic Principles, Ayurveda Anatomy and Physiology, expressing gratitude to all guests, staff members, and students who contributed to the success of the ceremony.

After formal proceedings, the orientation program conducted for the new entrants, providing an overview of course objectives, structure, and expectations. The event was coordinated by the Dr.L.D.R.De silva (Coordinator – Certificate course in Acupunture), Dr.K.N.A.Dharmasena (Coordinator – Certificate in herbal cosmetic product development), and Dr.S. Weerasekara (Coordinator – Basic principles of Ayurveda dietary regimens)

The inauguration ceremony was a remarkable success, reflecting the Faculty’s commitment to promoting quality education and contributing to the growth of the Ayurveda medicine sector in Sri Lanka.
