Centre for Gender Equality
The Centre for Gender Equity/Equality is the implementation arm of the UGC Standing Committee on Gender Equity/Equality. The Standing Committee is the standard setter, policy maker, regulator and arbitrator of UGC policy on gender equity / equality in Sri Lankan universities. The Centre for Gender Equity/Equality is headed by a Director and administrative staff who reports back to the Standing Committee.
Ensuring that the HEIs under the purview of the UGC have the institutional capability to ensure a conducive, gender-just working and learning environment to all its members and are recognized for their excellent practices.
The Goal of the Centre Gender Equity/Equality to promote Gender Equity/Equality in Sri Lankan universities by facilitating the establishment of gender sensitive university cultures and university environments which allow students and university staff (academic/administrative/support) to pursue their work without oppression and discrimination.
The Domain Members of The Centre of Gender Equality, University of Colombo of Institute of Indigenous Medicine, was conducted the programme for the students (Unani and Ayurveda) and Academic staff on 27th of February 2019 at the Auditorium of Institute of Indigenous Medicine, Rajagiriya (1.00 to 3.00 pm). Some academic staff members and over 500 students were participated.
Dr. K.C. Perera, Sectional Head Ayurveda, delivered the welcome speech to the gathering and also proposed Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Senior Professor P.A. Paranagama, the Director, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo said the importance of ‘Gender Equality’ and how we achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals. After the speech the short drama ‘Nilak Balamuda was presented by the students of visual and performing arts, Sripalee campus, Horana. After the short drama, domain member for Centre for Gender Equality Dr. R.S. Jayawardhana presented about the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender. After the speech the short film ‘Tell me why’ was screening. About 3.00pm the programme was ended.
