Interactive Workshop on Japanese Language and Culture

An Interactive Workshop on Japanese Language and Culture was conducted for the students of the Japanese Language Program, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, on 07th February 2026. The workshop was organized by the Postgraduate and Mid-career Development Unit of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine as part of the coursework for the Certificate Course in Basics in Japanese Language (CCBJL 02).

The session was conducted by six Japanese resource persons from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA):

  • Ms. Ikeda Yurika – Japanese Language Instructor
  • Ms. Iwakura Shiina – Japanese Language Instructor
  • Mr. Morita Yasuko – Elementary School Instructor
  • Ms. Maruyama Kohei – Youth Activity Supporter
  • Mr. Mekaru Yasuhiro – Computer Technology Instructor
  • Mr. Haruki Nakamura

The workshop successfully blended Japanese language learning with cultural experiences. Students were introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture, including the proper use of chopsticks and Ayatori (traditional Japanese string games). These interactive activities enhanced students’ cultural understanding while making the learning process enjoyable and engaging.

Prior to the commencement of the main session, a team of Ayurveda students delivered an introduction to the Sri Lankan Ayurveda system, providing a strong foundation for meaningful cultural exchange between the two traditions.
