Interactive Workshop on Ayurveda Medicinal System in Japan, Japanese Culture, and Learning Kanji with Songs and Games conducted for the Certificate Course in Basics in Japanese Language

This workshop conducted by the four Japanese resource persons of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (Mr. Yasuhiro Mekaru, Ms. Chiho Okawa, , Ms. Watase Nanoha and Ms. Haruka Nishimoto) as part of the course works of the Certificate Course in Basics in Japanese Language on 26th April 2025. It was organized by the Postgraduate and Mid-career Development Unit of Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo to enhance language proficiency and introduce participants to Japanese medicinal practices and cultural traditions in an interactive and engaging way.

This interactive workshop skillfully blended language learning with cultural immersion. Participants explored how Ayurveda influences Japanese wellness and medicinal practices, gaining insights into the interconnection of Eastern healing philosophies.

An engaging component of the workshop was the creative approach to learning Kanji, the complex characters of the Japanese writing system. Through songs and games, students enjoyed a fun and effective method of memorizing Kanji characters, making language acquisition both enjoyable and memorable.

Prior to commencement of the session two Ayurveda students were presented an introduction about the Sri Lankan Ayurveda system. The session included: An introduction to Ayurveda’s role in Japan’s health practices, Cultural exchange activities, Interactive Kanji learning with music and games, Group discussions and participation.

This workshop successfully achieved its objectives by merging language education with Japanese Medical practices and cultural appreciation. It enriched the participants’ understanding of Japanese life and traditions while strengthening their language skills in an innovative and enjoyable manner. Such initiatives provide a holistic approach to language learning and create meaningful cross-cultural experiences.
