Inauguration of the Certificate Course in Ayurveda Pharmacy
The inauguration of the Certificate Course in Ayurveda Pharmacy was a remarkable milestone in the academic history of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo. It was held on 15th of June 2024 and graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunarathne, Vice-Chancellor, University of Colombo; Professor Pathirage Kamal Perera, Dean, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Professor Ankuran Dutta, Director, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, High Commission of India, Colombo; Mr. Ashoka Hettigoda, Chairman & Managing Director, Hettigoda Industries (Pvt) Ltd; Mrs. Chandani Bandara, Chairperson, Forever Skin Naturals (Pvt) Ltd; along with Professor S.K.M.K. Herapathdeniya, Head, Department of Dravyaguna Vignana and Swastavritta, Dr. P.A.N.G. Perera, Coordinator, Certificate Course in Ayurveda Pharmacy and other esteemed faculty members.
This programme commenced with the participation of 32 students, covering three distinct certificate courses under the guidance and support of esteemed academia from the Department of Dravyaguna Vignana & Swastavritta, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo and conducted by the same.
The Certificate Course in Ayurveda Pharmacy was approved by the Departmental Committee of Ayurveda and Board of Management of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine and by the 501st meeting of the council of the University of Colombo, held on 14.10.2015. The programme is accredited at SLQF exit level 02 and NVQ level 03, comprising a total of 100 lecture and practical hours.
Students will gain substantial knowledge in Ayurveda Pharmacy including the specific areas of identification the herbal and mineral raw drug materials, collection, storage, measuring systems, primary and special drug processing methods, novel drug processing, standardization of raw materials and finished products, labelling, transportation, legal issues relevant to Ayurveda Pharmacy, etc. through this course.
In that sense, this inauguration symbolizes the commencement of a new era characterized by academic brilliance in Ayurveda Pharmacy at the University of Colombo. It fosters the professional development of the students which indirectly leads to the advancement of the economic and social status of the community.
