The world health organization (WHO) recognized its effectiveness and recommends the inclusion of acupuncture in to the National Health System in order to reduce the pressure of the high cost of some conventional treatments. According to them 113 countries world wide recognized and practice acupuncture. Acupuncture as a distinct therapeutic system which is recognized by law in 12 EU Member States, ie Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.
It has being noticed the physicians qualified in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Sri Lankan traditional medicine field are incorporating this method to their clinical practice. Certain education institutions conduct coursers for Acupuncture which may needed more standards and moderation. As a faculty of leading government University in Sri Lanka, we consider it is as our duty to empower over own alumina and other medical practitioners with correct and
updated knowledge.
Certificate course in Acupuncture is conducted by the Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.

To provide students to participate in hands on practice, such as providing supervised needling to patients
To practice Acupuncture in a real clinical setting

To understand how Acupuncture can complement and work in conjunction with Alternative Medicine.
