
Ceremonial Opening of the Panchakarma Day Treatment Unit and Unveiling the Name Boards of the Professorial Units of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo
Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, proudly inaugurated its “Panchakarma Day Treatment Unit” at the Ayurveda National Hospital on 19th September 2025. Parelle to this event unveiling the name boards of the professorial units ceremonially happened. The event was graced by Prof. Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, alongside Prof. Pathirage Kamal Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine (FIM), the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM), the Commissioner General of Ayurveda, the Director of the Ayurveda National Hospital, distinguished faculty members, consultants, medical and non-medical staff of the Ayurveda National Hospital, as well as undergraduate students of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine (FIM) and postgraduate scholars of FIM and PGIIM. This advanced facility was established under the guidance of Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Director , Ayurveda National Hospital, Prof. K. R. D. H. Kulathunga, Head of the Department of Kayachikitsa, and Deshiyachikitsa, and Dr. E. D. T. Priyanganie Gunarathna, Senior Lecturer, Clinical coordinator, and In-charge of the Day Treatment Unit. Further we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for generous donation provided by the volunteers to succeed in this endeavor. Their support means more than words can express—it empowers us to continue our mission and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.
The Panchakarma Day Treatment Unit is designed to enhance the academic and clinical training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing extensive hands-on experience in a diverse range of Panchakarma therapies, including Therapeutic Emesis (Vamana), Therapeutic Purgation (Virechana), Nasal Instillation (Nasya), Medicated Enema Therapy (Vasti), and Bloodletting Techniques (Raktamokshana) with medicinal leech therapy (Jalauka Avacharana), along with specialized external therapies and herbal applications.By seamlessly integrating practical training, clinical exposure, and research opportunities, the unit aspires to elevate the standard of Ayurvedic medical education, foster innovative research, and deliver high-quality healthcare services to the community, shaping the next generation of skilled and compassionate Ayurveda professionals.
