FIRST WORKSHOP FOR MENTEES ACADEMIC MENTORING PROGRAMME -FIM

The first program AMPIIM was conducted on 24th January 2023 at the IT lecture hall, Institute of Indigenous Medicine at 12.00 noon to 1.00 pm to introduce the mentoring activities to newly recruited academic members. Sessions commenced with the welcome speech by Dr. WASS Weerakoon AMP IIM Coordinator. Resource person Senior lecturer Dr. IGPR Kulanata interactively conducted her lecture on ‘What is mentoring’?

Topic covered with sub-topics;

  • What is mentoring and how to differentiate from similar processes in higher education?
  • Explained the history and the six types of mentoring including importance of reverse mentoring in the new era.
  • Benefits of both parties and keys to a successful mentoring program as well as details about “Why specially mentoring is need for the success of early carrier academics?”
  • Need of areas of mentoring in every stage of academic life
  • Differences of Tutoring, Training, Mentoring, Supervision, Teaching and Coaching
  • Five techniques of Mentoring
  • Mentor’s roles & responsibilities and the impact of mentoring ( to mentor, mentee, HR team and to the organization)
  • Responsibilities of mentor and mentee
  • What to look for in a potential mentor
  • Preparing for and Structuring Your First Mentor Meeting
  • Need of mento-mentee train together
  • Issues that need professional help during mentoring process and essentiality of maintaining confidentiality
  • And finally, what actually does mentor do?

Participants were satisfied with the program and ended with vote of thanks by AMPIIM coordinator.

The second program AMPFIM was conducted on 19th July 2023 at the Mini-auditorium of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine from 12.00 noon to 1.00 pm on Academic responsibilities on Teaching, learning and Assessments. Sessions commenced with the welcome speech by Dr. WASS Weerakoon AMP FIM Coordinator. The resource person of the session was Senior lecturer Dr. Jeevani Dahanayaka, Department of Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine Professor Pathirage Kamal Perera also participated in the event and discussed topic-related matters. All the FIM mentees participated in the workshop.
