
Faculty of Indigenous Medicine Celebrates Continued Growth at the Inauguration of the 2026/2027 Postgraduate Diploma Programmes
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, proudly inaugurated its Postgraduate Diploma Programmes for the Academic Year 2026/2027 on 3rd July 2026 at the Faculty Main Auditorium, welcoming around 150 new postgraduate scholars.
The ceremony was graced by Professor I. M. Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, as the Chief Guest, and Mrs. Deepthi Sumanasena, Commissioner General of Ayurveda, as the Guest of Honor. The event was further honored by the presence of Professor S. P. Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Parakrama Hemachandra, Director of the Ayurveda National Hospital, Dr. Champika Peris, Director of the Bandaranayake Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute, Dr. Saman Opatha, Chief medical officer- Pharmacy, Ayurveda National Hospital, along with Heads of Departments, Course Coordinators, members of the academic and administrative staff, and other distinguished guests.
This year’s intake comprises scholars enrolled in the following programmes:
Postgraduate Diploma in Orthopaedic Treatments – Department of Ayurveda Medicine and Indigenous Medicine
Postgraduate Diploma in Panchakarma – Department of Ayurveda Medicine and Indigenous Medicine
Postgraduate Diploma in Stree Swasthasanrakshana – Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics
Postgraduate Diploma in Dravyaguna Vignana in Nutraceutical Product Development – Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine
The ceremony celebrated the remarkable growth of the Faculty’s Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit. What began in 2023 with a single postgraduate diploma programme and 19 students has grown steadily over the years. Following an enrolment of 62 students in 2024 and the successful graduation of 69 students across five postgraduate diploma programmes in 2025, the faculty now proudly welcomes around 150 scholars for the 2026/2027 academic year—marking another significant milestone in postgraduate education in Indigenous Medicine.
A special highlight of the event was the unveiling of the first newsletter of the Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit by the Vice Chancellor. The publication reflects the Unit’s commitment to sharing its academic programmes, research, training opportunities, achievements, and initiatives that contribute to lifelong learning and professional excellence.
The inauguration ceremony concluded on a vibrant note with captivating cultural performances by the Faculty’s undergraduate students, celebrating the beginning of a new academic journey.
